The Granada Community Park and Recreation Center Project proposes development of the parcels locally known as the Burnham Strip and would include active and passive recreational zones, walking paths, fitness stations, park restrooms, outdoor showers, a dog park, small and large group picnic areas, kids’ play structures, skate ramp and related skate feature, parking areas, and a renovated and expanded community recreation center.Â
The ADA-compliant plan is designed in three sections: a “village green” to the south, preserving the view down Avenue Portola, an active recreation area in the center across from existing buildings, and a large area to the north with small picnic and exercise areas, natural landscaping, and ocean views. A mix of wide and narrow trails run throughout the park, and at the south end a new trail would lead to the highway crossing and Coastal Trail at Coronado Street.Â
During the past year, multiple consultants have been turning community driven conceptual plans into the more detailed plans that will be submitted to San Mateo County for permitting. For a downloadable pdf of the Park Plan, click the large image below.
As part of the ongoing process, Kikuchi+Kankel Design Group has developed renderings of how the park will look and feel when completed (designs shown below).

Soon the package of detailed park and recreation center plans and the environmental review will be ready to go to the County. The County review process will then include additional opportunities for public comment on the design. Nancy Marsh, GCSD Board President, says “we are excited to be approaching this major milestone for Granada Community Park and Recreation Center and to be able to share these beautiful renderings of the park design with the residents of the District and our Coastside neighbors.”Â
Parks and recreation funding is an allocation of general property taxes and does NOT depend on revenue from GCSD sewer fees. To fully realize the exciting potential of the park and recreation center designs, GCSD has engaged Townsend Public Affairs to help with grant applications and development of additional funding from private, county, state, and federal sources.Â
